5-Ways-to-Save-Money-on-Groceries

There are lots of needy families out there that need your help, the best thing you can do is to give, and give more.  To do that, you need some ways to save money on groceries.

Some of my favorite memories as a kid were the nights when we had toast and tea for dinner. our mom would make up as much toast as we could eat, some hot tea, and loads of homemade jelly.

It was always delicious and a lot of fun I was an adult in my mid-20s when I finally realized that those nights always came at the end of the month – when money was tightest.

My mom was able to feed 6 kids for $2.  During the holidays, we received many bags of food and presents.  As a kid, food was food and presents were great.  I did not give it a second thought.

Here are 5 Ways to Save Money on Groceries so you can give more.

1. Take Advantage of Buy One Get One Free Sales

I just went to the grocery store today and Cocoa Krispies were Buy One Get One Free.

I bought 4 boxes for $8, These are going to my daughter’s school with her for the food drive; What kid doesn’t like Cocoa Krispies?

2. Use Coupons

If you are like me and my wife, you only clip coupons for items that you will buy or want to try?  Ninety percent of the coupons go to waste in our house.

Starting in October, start looking for great coupons that don’t expire until the end of the year.

Even though you may not normally eat these items, it doesn’t mean that someone else would not be grateful to receive the gift.

3. Buy Store Brands

Growing up, I did not care what kind of peanut butter I ate as long as it was not crunchy.

I drank Bubba Cola and loved it – in fact, I even crave it today.  The point is, kids, don’t care if their food is name brand, especially when they are hungry.

Moms and Dads don’t care either when their kids are hungry.  If you care, get over it and get into the spirit of giving as much as you can. Payless and buy more.

4. Pool Your Money

My wife’s company conducts an annual food drive around the holidays.  They are aggressive in their efforts.

Last year, they were one of the top donors by the pound in the city of Jacksonville – beating out some very large Fortune 500 operation centers in Jacksonville.

How did they do it?  One of the team leaders ask her teammates to give her money.

She takes all of that money and goes to a local discount grocer, shops the discounts, asks for additional discounts, and just goes crazy.

The key is that when you have more money to spend, people will give you higher discounts when you ask.

5. Use Gift Cards

My credit card earns points.  With these points, I can order gift cards for almost any establishment – including grocery stores.  This is free money that can be used to save money during food drives.

Saving money will help you feel good.  Helping others is a great way to feel good as well.

You can extend this good feeling to your family by getting them involved – don’t be good feeling greedy.

Tip – Get Your Kids Involved:

There are three ways that your kids can get involved in helping you save money on groceries for food drives. First, have them help you clip coupons and find deals.

Use this 1-on-1 time to talk to them about the needs of the families you are helping and why it is important, Second, take them with you to shop.

Split your budget with them, grab two carts, and see who gets more food for the money. Lastly, encourage them to use their own money, Kids love helping other kids.

Once you talk to them about the kids you are helping they will get excited.  Use this time to encourage them to give from their own pocket and pass down your financial values.
