At least 36 people were killed and dozens injured when two passenger trains collided near Ghotki

According to News, the Millat Express from Karachi to Sargodha between Riti and Dharki railway stations near Ghotki on Sunday morning while the Sir Syed Express from Rawalpindi to Karachi collided with several bogies. 

As a result of the accident, 36 people have been confirmed dead so far while dozens have been injured. 

Most of the dead were aboard the Millat Express while most of the passengers on the Sir Syed Express were injured.

SSP Mirpur Mathelo Omar Tufail said that 7 bogies were affected in the accident out of which 3 bodies were completely destroyed.

The local administration says that 6 to 8 bogies are stuck in each other, several passengers are still trapped in these bodies. 

The bogies are being cut to evacuate them, while besides local rescue volunteers, Rangers and Pakistan Army personnel are also engaged in rescue operations. 

Rescue operations are slow and heavy machinery has not yet reached the crash site. 

Minor injuries are being shifted to nearby hospitals on their own while preparations are underway to shift the injured to Sukkur and Rahim Yar Khan.

Local sources said that 6 bogies of Millat Express from Karachi to Sargodha derailed and went to another track. 

Meanwhile, Sir Syed Express coming from the opposite direction also reached and collided with the disembarked bogies of Millat Express.

Sindh-Punjab train services suspended

As a result of the accident, the movement of trains between Sindh and Punjab has been suspended. The railway administration says that first the injured will be evacuated and the bogies will be removed, after which the process of rehabilitation of the tanks will be started.

Railway Minister Muhammad Azam Khan Swati has taken notice of the train accident and ordered an inquiry within 24 hours.

Expressing deep sorrow and grief over the train accident, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he was in awe of the tragic railway accident in Ghotki. 

He directed the Railway Minister to reach the spot and provide medical aid to the injured. 

Also, a comprehensive investigation has been ordered into the flaws in the railway safety system.

'Federal government should pay compensation to the survivors'

Expressing regret over the train accident near Daharki, PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari said that the Sindh government should take concrete steps for the rescue operation and the federal government should pay compensation to the families of the victims.
